The inventive device acts as the guardian for a master secret key, and yet allows routine encryption and decryption of data fields by the application software. Through its interface with the application computing environment, it provides the application with encryption and decryption capabilities enabled by the knowledge of the master key, but without providing the master key value itself to the application. In a preferred embodiment, this is achieved by symmetric key derivation: the application sends a derived symmetric key request to the device with a derivation context field, and receives the relevant symmetric key. The actual derivation algorithm is irrelevant outside of the device. For distributed databases or directory replication, each server computer is equipped with a device, each guarding a local copy of the master secret key, allowing encryption and decryption of data fields irrespective of their location.
