An indirect calorimeter for measuring the subject's oxygen consumption per unit of time employs a mouthpiece (12) through which the subject breathes for a period of time. Conduits connect the mouthpiece to a flow meter (14) and a capnometer (26) so that the subject's inhalations, and exhalations pass through the flow meter, and the exhalations also pass through the capnometer. Electrical signals from the flow meter and capnometer are provided to a computer (22) which calculates the CO2 exhaled by the subject during the test by integrating the instantaneous CO2 content of an exhalation as measured by the capnometer over the volume as measured by the flow meter, substracts that quantity from the exhaled volume, and substrats their difference from the inhaled volume. In alternative embodiments the system can also measure the subject's cardiac output and delivered oxygen.
L'invention concerne un calorimètre indirect permettant de mesurer la consommation en oxygène d'un sujet par unité de temps, et utilisant un embout buccal (12) à travers lequel le sujet respire pendant un certain temps. Des conduits relient l'embout buccal à un débitmètre (14) et à un capnomètre (26), de manière que les inspirations et les expirations du sujet passent dans le débimètre, les expirations passant également dans le capnomètre. Le débimètre et le capnomètre envoient des signaux électriques à un ordinateur (22) qui calcule le CO2 expiré par le sujet au cours du test, en intégrant le contenu en CO2 instantané d'une expiration mesuré par le capnomètre au volume mesuré par le débimètre.
