Improved material and method for use in sealing plate and frame apparatus, such as a plate and frame heat exchanger, are provided. The gasket material comprises a core of elongated polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) contained within a tight wrap of high strength film. The gasket material has the exceptional oper- ational properties of PTFE, while being resistant to cold flow or "creep" which distorts most PTFE seals under heavy unconfined compression. The preferred material is pre-compressed to aid in installation.
L'invention concerne un matériau et un procédé améliorés utilisés pour assurer l'étanchéité d'appareils à plaques et cadre, tels que des échangeurs thermiques. Le matériau est composé d'une âme allongée de polytetrafluoroéthylène (PTFE) contenue dans un enrobage serré en film à haute résistance. Le matériau d'étanchéité possède les exceptionelles qualités fonctionnelles du PTFE, tout en étant résistant à l'écoulement à froid ou "fluage" qui déforme la plupart des joints en PTFE sous forte compression unidimensionnelle.
