A yoke for a railway draft gear has a head portion comprising two opposed top and bottom walls, and two opposed spaced apart side walls disposed between the top and bottom walls. Each of the side walls includes a respective elongate opening capable of operatively receiving therein a draft key of the railway draft gear, and a reinforcing portion surrounding a forward end of the opening and extending rearwardly along substantially the entire length thereof. The reinforcing portion comprises a thickened nose portion surrounding a forward end of said key slot. A pair of buttress portions are disposed on respective sides of the opening and extend substantially the entire length thereof from a transverse forward limit adjoining the thickened nose portion proximal a central axis of a forward end radius of the opening. A transverse cross section of each said buttress portion is substantially rectangular and has a width dimension extending transversely with respect to the side wall and a height dimension extending normal with respect to an outer surface of the side wall. The width dimension extends from the opening to a lateral outside edge of the side wall at the forward limit, and gradually diminishes inwardly toward the rearward end of the opening. The height dimension is a maximum at the forward limit and gradually diminishes toward the rearward end of the opening.
