A slat or rail used in a covering for an architectural opening includes a wooden core or the like that is wrapped with a flexible film of foil, paper or the like with the film bonded to the core with a Polyurethane Reactive (PUR) hot melt adhesive that provides a moisture free barrier around the core. The core may be provided with grooves in which edges of the film can be inserted to facilitate an aesthetic attachment of the film to the core. The core may also be made from a single strip of wood, various interconnected species of wood which may be finger jointed together or even two or more strips of wood that are abutted and adhesively bonded together in side- by-side relationship.
