ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A portable hand held tiller has a cover for covering tilling elements, and an inlet transmission housing for covering and supporting at least a portion of a transmission system, and a main transmission housing for enclosing a worm gear drive system. Advantageously, the inlet transmission housing is rigidly connected directly to the cover, and the main transmission housing is integrally formed with the inlet transmission housing. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the end portions of the cover are helmet shaped. A rigid tiller element formed of two sheet metal components is also disclosed.
