The present invention provides an Internet based container tracking system for tracking essentially homogeneous containers such as trays, reels, drums and the like, and in particular, pallets. The system relies on a central database system through which the participants can access their container records at the point of a transaction involving transfer of the container. A paperless system is provided which can be essentially instantaneously updated for both parties in the transaction almost simultaneously, and which can virtually eliminate other traditional methods for tracking containers. The system also provides a platform for a number of different container tracking systems to be co-ordinated together while maintaining the security of each party on the system.
