A removable foot protection system comprises a sole member which may be of multiple element construction comprising a tread (72), and movable overlapping plates (62, 64). Around the periphery of the sole member are support strips (68, 73) to (75), which can in use engage spaced peripheral portions of the horse's hoof. The support strips pivot or flex to conform to the profile of the shoe and a clamping force is exerted by an encircling cable (78).
