A method and system for hosting a plurality of web sites is disclosed. The system facilitates web sites being administered by remotely located administrators. A subsystem for facilitating administration of the web sites by the administrators comprises a connection to a network, a plurality of agents and a kernel. The connection to the network permits the remotely located administrators to send and receive signals to and from the system. The plurality of agents are each associated with an application which can be executed by the web sites. The kernel interfaces the connection with a plurality of agents. A set of applications executable on the web site is associated with each administrator so that the kernel restricts the signals sent and received from each remote administrator to the set of applications associated with the administrator. This is achieved in one embodiment by account and password information for each administrator being stored in an administrator directory. Once the administrator enters the account number and password to the system, the administrator is given access information which is the sent to an agent associated with the application to be administered. The agent then permits the administrator to administer the associated application provided the access information is valid.
