A hybrid air bag system has a simple internal structure and can be manufactured at a low cost. The hybrid inflator is positioned within a first container (210) which has a rupturable cover and a bottom plate. The hybrid inflator has a second container (214) defining a first chamber (302) filled with a quantity of compressed gas, and then sealed. A pyrotechnic heater (350) contains a pyrotechnic charge (366) and squib (364) therein and generates high temperature combustion products by burning a pyrotechnic charge contained within a second chamber, a booster charge (384), and a gas generating material (386) contained within a third chamber. The combustion products push upwardly against a lower end surface of an operation pin (420) elastically supported by a plate spring (412) and slidably and vertically positioned within a fourth chamber (410). The operation pin ruptures a burst disk (330) sealing the first chamber. Consequently, the compressed gas in the second container (214) and the combustion products are united and injected into an inflatable air bag to inflate the air bag. Thus, a passenger in a motor vehicle can be protected from colliding with a structural part of the motor vehicle.
Système hybride de coussin pneumatique possédant une structure intérieure simple et pouvant être fabriqué de façon économique. Le gonfleur hybride est placé à l'intérieur d'une premier conteneur (210) possédant un couvercle cassable et une plaque de fond. Ce gonfleur hybride comporte un deuxième conteneur (214) définissant une première chambre (302) remplie de gaz comprimé et fermée hermétiquement. Un dispositif pyrotechnique de chauffe (350) contient une charge pyrotechnique (366), dans laquelle se trouve une amorce (364), et génère des produits de combustion à température élevée en brûlant une charge pyrotechnique contenue à l'intérieur d'une deuxième chambre, une charge de stimulation (384) et un matériau (386) générateur de gaz contenu à l'intérieur d'une troisième chambre. Les produits de combustion exercent une poussée vers le haut contre une surface terminale inférieure d'une tige (420) de fonctionnement supportée élastiquement par une lame-ressort (412) et placée coulissante et verticale à l'intérieur d'une quatrième chambre (410). La tige (420) de fonctionnement rompt un disque (330) destiné à la rupture qui ferme hermétiquement la première chambre. De ce fait, le gaz comprimé dans le deuxième conteneur (214) et les produits de combustion sont réunis et injectés dans un coussin pneumatique gonflable, afin de gonfler ce dernier. Ce système permet de protéger le passager d'un véhicule à moteur contre une collision avec une partie structurale dudit véhicule.
