A toolholder (1) is provided for receiving, pressurizing, and conducting an external stream (3) of coolant to a rotating cutting tool without mechanical containment between the toolholder (1) and the coolant stream (3). The toolholder (1) includes a shank (9) attachably connectable to a rotatable drive shaft, an adapter (11), such as a collet chuck (31), for connecting a rotatable cutting tool to the shank (9), and a coolant inducer (13) mounted between the shank (9) and the adapter (11). The coolant inducer (13) is formed from an impeller assembly (15) having a plurality of uniformly spaced, coolant receiving openings (54) around its periphery for receiving an uncontained coolant stream. A passageway (16) is provided along the axis of rotation of the adapter (11) for receiving and conducting the coolant pressurized by the impeller assembly (15) to a cutting tool secured in the adapter (11). The impeller-type coolant inducer eliminates the need for fluid seals or other friction-generating mechanical interfaces between the rotating toolholder and the source of pressurized coolant.

Ce porte-outil (1) est conçu pour recevoir et mettre sous pression un courant de fluide de refroidissement venant de l'extérieur et l'acheminer vers un outil de coupe rotatif et ce, sans confinement mécanique entre le porte-outil (1) et le courant de fluide de refroidissement (3). Ce porte-outil (1) comporte un corps d'outil (9) pouvant être assujetti à un arbre d'entraînement rotatif, un adaptateur (11) tel qu'un mandrin à pince (9) et un aubage d'alimentation (13) situé entre le corps d'outil (9) et l'adaptateur (11). Cet aubage d'alimentation est constitué d'un ensemble turbine (15) possédant sur son pourtour plusieurs orifices de réception de fluide de refroidissement (54) ménagés à intervalles réguliers et servant à recevoir un courant de fluide de refroidissement non confiné. Un passage (16) est constitué le long de l'axe de rotation de l'adaptateur (11) qui sert à recevoir le fluide de refroidissement mis sous pression par l'ensemble turbine (15) et à l'acheminer vers un outil de coupe fixé dans l'adaptateur (11). Cet aubage d'alimentation de fluide de refroidissement du type turbine permet d'éviter le recours à des joints d'étanchéité ou à d'autres éléments mécaniques de jonction produisant des frottements entre le porte-outil rotatif et la source de fluide de refroidissement sous pression.
