A method of inhibiting viruses in which a virus is contacted with an antiviral amount of a compound of formula (I). Activity is shown against HIV and other viruses. In formula (I), W is a bridge carbon which has a polar or non-polar side group; X and Y independently are an aromatic group, an alkyl group, a sulfonyl group or a carbonyl group, said aromatic group is selected from the group consisting of Ar, Ar sulfonyl, Ar carboxy and Ar alkyl, where Ar is an aromatic cyclic or aromatic heterocyclic ring having from five to seven members; said alkyl group having from one to ten carbons; Z is a group listed for X and Y, a fused aryl moiety having from seven to ten carbons or hydrogen; a, d and e independently are a number from zero to 10; c and b independently are a number from one to 10; and the formula is cyclic or acyclic and includes sufficient hydrogens for a stable molecule.

Procédé d'inhibition de virus, qui consiste à mettre un virus en contact avec une dose antivirale d'un composé de formule I qui présente une activité dirigée contre le VIH et d'autres virus. Dans la formule (I), W est un carbone de liaison comprenant un groupe latéral polaire ou non; X et Y sont indépendamment un groupe aromatique, un groupe alkyle, un groupe sulfuryle ou un groupe carbonyle, ledit groupe aromatique étant choisi dans le groupe comprenant Ar, Ar sulfuryle, Ar carboxy et Ar alkyle, Ar représentant un noyau aromatique cyclique ou hétérocyclique à cinq à sept éléments; ledit groupe alkyle comprenant un à dix carbones; Z est un des groupes cités pour X et Y, une fraction aryle fusionnée comprenant sept à dix atomes de carbone ou de l'hydrogène; a, d et e représentent indépendamment un chiffre de 0 à 10; c et b représentent indépendamment un chiffre de un à 10; et la formule est cyclique ou acyclique et comporte suffisamment d'atomes d'hydrogène pour qu'une molécule soit stable.
