A self-contained puzzle (10) includes an axially ex- tending tube (12) with first and second end caps (14, 16) mounted on opposite ends. A plurality of gears are concen- trically and rotatably mounted about the tube between the first and second end caps (14, 16). Slide support elements (20), on each of the gears form channels therebetween which slidably receive a slide element (20) which is manipulatable from a channel in one gear to an aligned, empty channel in an adjacent gear. The exterior surfaces (100) of the slide ele- ments (20) form a mosaic when assembled and contain indi- cia forming a puzzle or design. Releasable lock members are unitarily formed on one of the tube or each gear and relea- sably engage axially extending grooves formed in the other of the tube and each gear to temporarily lock each gear in a selected angular position about the tube relative to adjacent gears.
