A method and apparatus for performing a lookup (Fig. 3) in a switching device (150) of a packet switched network where the lookup includes a plurality of distinct operations each of which returns a result that includes a pointer to a next operation in a sequence of operations for the lookup. The method includes determining a first lookup operation to be executed, executing the first lookup operation including returning a result and determining if the result includes a pointer to another lookup operation in the sequence of operations. If the result includes a pointer to another lookup operation, the lookup operation indicated by the result is executed. Else, the lookup is terminated.

L'invention porte sur un procédé et un appareil d'exécution de consultations dans le dispositif de commutation d'un réseau à commutation de paquets. Une consultation comporte plusieurs opérations distinctes fournissant chacune un résultat comportant le positionnement d'un pointeur. Le procédé consiste à déterminer une première opération de consultation à exécuter, à l'exécuter, à obtenir un résultat, et à déterminer si le résultat comporte le positionnement du pointeur sur une autre opération de consultation dans la suite des opérations. Si le résultat place le pointeur sur une autre opération de consultation, celle-ci est exécutée. Sinon, la consultation est terminée.
