A method is provided for performing a granulometric separation and recovery of solids from a mixture of solids and water introduced to a modified form of a known Automedium Cyclone apparatus. In particular, the vortex finder of the cyclone is spaced sufficiently above the tri-conical bottom to separate and recover a first fraction of fine particles as an overhead product from the vortex finder, the spacing being required for rejection of the coarser fractions. A second fraction of fine particles is recovered from the lowest conical section of the tri-conical bottom, for transport to the overhead product, resulting in an underflow product substantially devoid of fines. A dense, rapidly circulating bed of solids developed in the middle conical section is utilized to shatter solids agglomerations to liberate contained liquid and variously sized particles and fibers. The method is particularly applicable to the treatment of sewage, acting to separate any fibrous mass into discrete fractions for granulometric separation and recovery.
