The present invention is directed to a new class of beta-ketone, beta oxime and beta hydrazine phosphonate NMDA antagonists of the formula (I) or (Ia): (see formula I and II) wherein A, B, M, R1 and R2 are variously defined, said antagonists being useful in the treatment of a number of disease states, for example epilepsy, nerve trauma such as that caused by stroke, cardiac arrest, hypoglycemia, and physical damage to either the brain or spinal cord, neurodegenerative diseases, anxiety and for the relief of pain.
