ABSTRACT A masking composition for use in paint spray booths which comprises an aqueous solution or dispersion of a cellulose gum, a plasticizer and preferably a surfactant, The composition is applied to the surfaces and related paint spray booth equipment to mask them from paint overspray during the painting operation. The maskant forms a water soluble film which can easily be removed by washing with water subsequent to the painting operation.
