A method for detecting the presence of a spongiform encephalopathy (e.g. Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) in an animal comprising determining the presence and/or amount of agent (e.g. by 2D-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and staining) in a body fluid (e.g. cerebrospinal fluid) of the animal which has a molecular weight of between 35-39 kDa, and a pI of 5.3 and which does not cross-react with antibody raised against apoliprotein E and relating the result of this determination to a control value (e.g. from a known uninfected animal) so as to be able to detect the likely presence of spongiform encephalopathy in the animal.

Ce procédé de détection de la présence d'une encéphalopathie spongiforme (par exemple l'encéphalopathie spongiforme bovine), chez un animal, comprend les étapes consistant à déterminer la présence et/ou la quantité d'un agent (par exemple par électrophorèse sur gel polyacrylamide 2D et coloration), dans un fluide organique (par exemple le fluide cérébro-spinal) de l'animal, lequel agent possède un poids moléculaire compris entre 35 et 39 kDa, un pI de 5,3 et ne réagit pas de façon croisée avec l'anticorps dirigé contre l'apoliprotéine E, puis à comparer le résultat de cette détermination avec une valeur témoin (par exemple à partir d'un animal connu comme n'étant pas infecté), de manière à pouvoir détecter la présence probable chez l'animal de l'encéphalopathie spongiforme.
