The invention relates to a process for accelerating the rate of heating of a fixed bed catalyst to the light-off temperature for the catalytic reaction by supplying supplementary energy from external energy sources during a limited activation time, wherein the fixed bed catalyst may be present as a solid body or in bulk form and has a defined gas inlet area for the reaction media. The supplementary energy is supplied to one or more isolated sections of the gas inlet area of the catalyst. This means that the energy requirement to initiate the catalyst can be kept low.
