To follow and inspect a common edge (13) between two sheet metal blanks (6,7) which are to be welded together, a line pattern (5) is projected across the edge (13) by a projector (2) and is imaged by a camera (3). The image captured is analysed in order to derive from the trace of the lines information on the gap between the blanks, or on the track of the edge. The pattern projected has several lines with different light intensities. When the photographed image is processed, it is then possible even if there is variation in the reflection characteristics of the sheet metal blanks to select a line which is neither too faint nor too bright in the image obtained and which can therefore be used for meaningful analysis.
Pour suivre et inspecter une arête commune (13) entre deux plaques de tôle (6, 7) devant être soudées l'une à l'autre, on projette une forme de ligne (5) en travers de cette arête (13) au moyen d'un projecteur (2), tandis qu'une caméra (3) enregistre cette image qui est ensuite analysée pour obtenir des informations sur l'écartement entre les plaques ou sur le tracé de l'arête d'après la trace des lignes projetées. La forme projetée est constituée de plusieurs lignes de diverses intensités lumineuses. Lors du traitement de cette image photographiée, on est donc en mesure, même en cas de variation dans les caractéristiques de réflexion des plaques de tôle, de choisir sur l'image obtenue une ligne qui n'est ni trop faiblement lumineuse, ni trop brillante, et qui peut donner lieu à une analyse fructueuse.
