An optical switching unit for a network node serving a service platform comprises a fault detect unit, an optical switch and a switch controller for the drop traffic. The fault detect unit detects a fault in the working or protection incoming traffic and provides a selection signal to the switch controller. The controller operates the optical switch to select the better of the two inputs basedon the selection signal. The add traffic is inserted in the respective outgoing channels using a simple passive optical splitter. Alternatively, two passive splitters may be used in the optical protection unit, in which case the input signals are switched on and off using attenuators, or simply by turning the short reach transmitters off as need be.
