A method is disclosed for detecting the risk of SIDS in newborn infants is revealed: this Method detects two different size DNA fragment obtained from digestion of a section at the 3' region of the coding region of the human prion protein with the restriction enzyme Bsiy 1 instead of the single unique size DNA fragment obtained from digesting the same section of the prion protein in infants not at risk for SIDS.
