Abstract: A convertible day bed comprises a seat-rest/mattress portion supported on legs and is laterally slidingly positionable thereon between ones of seating and bedding positions relative to a co- operable backrest portion. The backrest portion is independently supported in superposed, seat-rest/mattress-portion bridging relation between mutually longitudinally spaced apart end panels located adjacent respective ones of longitudinally opposed ends of the seat-rest/mattress portion, in substantially laterally non- interfering relation therewith. When the day bed is arranged in the seating position, the backrest portion is bridgingly arranged over the seat-rest/mattress portion with only an ergonmetrically selected seat rest width of the seat-rest/mattress portion being slidingly extended laterally outwardly beyond the superposed bridging backrest portion. When in the bedding position, however, an ergonmetrically selected mattress width of the seat- rest/mattress portion is slidingly extended laterally outwardly beyond the bridging back rest portion.
