Disclosed are compounds of the formulae (see fig. IV) and (see fig. V) (wherein R13 and R14 are each independently H or CH3O, and R5 is SO2NR8R12 in which R8 and R12 are each independently H or (C1-C6)alkyl or R8 and R12 together with N to which they are attached, from a pyrrolidine or piperidine ring) useful as intermediates for producing substituted indoles as phosphodiesterase type IV inhibitors.
