ABSTRACT This invention is directed to a phosphate-based glass/organic polymer composite of increased resistance to hydration, and a method of producing such acomposite, which comprises a mixture of the following components: a matrix material comprised of at least one organic thermoplastic or thermosetting polymer; at least one phosphate glass; and an amount of at least one water soluble stabilizer component which provides a source of metal cations having a valency of 2+ or higher. The amount of the stabilizer component is sufficient to improve the composite's resistance to moisture. Preferably, the mixture is comprised of the three basic components in the approximate indicated weight proportions: 1-99.5% of thematrix material; 0.1-95% of the phosphate glass; and, 0.01-40% of the stabilizercomponent. Furthermore, the metal cations preferred are selected from the group consisting of Ba2+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Al3+ Zn2+ Sr+2 and Fe3+.
