A human gene and a mouse gene corresponding to Drosophila period gene which has been known as participating in the circadian period. The proteins and DNAs are applicable to the treatment of diseases relating to the circadian rhythm such as sleep stage regression syndrome, sleep stage progression syndrome, non- circadian agrypnotic syndrome, irregular agrypnotic disorder and time difference syndrome (i.e., so-called jet lag), labor and health management of those working until late at night irregularly, prevention of night poriomania in dementia, etc.
