A method, an apparatus and a system are provided for deriving a characteristic of a product using X-rays. X-ray image data associated with the product is received, the X-ray image data being derived by performing an X-ray scan of the product using an X- ray imaging apparatus and conveying attenuation information resulting from interaction of X--rays with the product. A response of a reference product to X-rays is then simulated to generate simulated X-ray image data. The simulated X-ray image data and the received X-ray image data are then processed to derive one or more characteristics of the product. Information conveying the derived characteristic of the product is then released. In a specific implementation, the product is a liquid product comprised of a bottle at least partially filled with liquid and the derived characteristic of the liquid product is a threat status assessment associated with the liquid in the bottle. In another aspect, a simulation engine for simulating interactions between X-rays and objects is also provided.
L'invention porte sur un procédé, un appareil et un système pour déterminer une caractéristique d'un produit à l'aide de rayons X. Les données d'image radiographiques associées au produit sont reçues, les données d'image radiographiques étant obtenues par balayage du produit aux rayons X au moyen d'un appareil d'imagerie par rayons X et représentant une information d'atténuation résultant de l'interaction des rayons X avec le produit. Une réponse aux rayons X d'un produit de référence est ensuite simulée pour générer des données d'image radiographiques simulées. Les données d'image par rayons X simulées et les données d'image par rayons X reçues sont ensuite traitées en vue de déterminer une ou plusieurs caractéristiques du produit. Des informations représentant la caractéristique du produit ainsi déterminée sont ensuite transmises. Dans un mode de réalisation spécifique, le produit est un produit liquide composé d'une bouteille au moins partiellement remplie de liquide, et la caractéristique du produit liquide est une évaluation du niveau de risque associé au liquide dans la bouteille. Dans un autre aspect, l'invention porte sur un moteur de simulation pour simuler des interactions entre des rayons X et des objets.
