Pour fabriquer du pentafluoroéthane (F125) et/ou du 1,1,1,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropane (F227ea), on soumet un courant gazeux de trifluorométahne à une pyrolyse, puis on met le mélange de gaz issus de cette pyrolyse en contact avec un catalyseur de fluoration. Ce procédé permet de fabriquer plusieurs HFC de propriétés physiques différentes à partir d'un même produit de départ, sans conduire à la formation de sous-produits et impuretés chlorés du type HCFC ou CFC ou encore d'acide chlohydrique.
