Structure for and method of therapeutic treatment of a body portion to relieve swelling and pain and facilitate healing of injuries, wounds and incisions. The structure includes a shield adapted to be placed in intimate surface to surface contact with the body portion, a regulator for passing a fluid through the shield at a regulated temperature and/or flow rate, a control for controlling the flow and temperature of the fluid and a temperature sensor for modifying the temperature and flow of the fluid in response to monitored temperature which may be the temperature of the body portion. The shield is constructed of an inner and outer elastomric member, at least the inner member of which is in the mirror image form of the body portion to be treated, which inner and outer members are sealed together to form a pocket, tube structure which may be manifolded in the form of the body portion within the pocket, and a gelatinuous substance within the pocket positioned between the tube structure and the inner member. The inner and outer members may be directly molded on castings of the body portion and the tube structure may be adhered to the inner surface of the outer member. An air pocket and an air valve may be formed in the outer member. In use, the shield is positioned over a body portion to be treated in intimate surface to surface contact therewith. and fluid is passed through the tube from the regulator at a flow rate and having a temperature controlled by the controller modified by the monitored temperature to provide cryogenic therapy. Air under pressure may be placed in the air pocket to provide compression therapy.
Structure servant au traitement thérapeutique d'une partie du corps et méthode connexe ayant pour objet de réduire l'enflure et la douleur et de favoriser la guérison de blessures, de lésions et d'incisions. La structure comporte un écran conçu pour être placé en contact direct avec la partie du corps à traiter; un régulateur faisant passer un fluide dans l'écran à une température et/ou à un débit déterminés; un dispositif de commande régularisant le débit et la température du fluide; un capteur de température permettant de modifier la température et le débit du fluide en fonction de la température captée, qui pourrait être celle de la partie du corps à traiter. L'écran est constitué d'un élément interne et d'un élément externe élastomères, l'élément interne au moins étant symétrique à la partie du corps à traiter, ces éléments formant une poche étanche; d'une structure en forme de tube qui peut être adaptée à la partie du corps se trouvant dans la poche; d'une substance gélatineuse placée dans la poche entre la structure en forme de tube et l'élément interne. Les éléments interne et externe peuvent être moulés directement en fonction de la partie du corps à traiter, et la structure en forme de tube peut être collée à la surface interne de l'élément externe. Une poche d'air et une soupape d'air peuvent être formées dans l'élément externe. En mode d'utilisation, l'écran est placé en contact intime avec la partie du corps à traiter, et le fluide passe dans le tube à partir du régulateur selon un débit déterminé et à une température contrôlée par un dispositif de commande en fonction de la température captée en vue d'un traitement par cryotechnique. De l'air pressurisé peut être placé dans la poche d'air en vue d'un traitement par compressothérapie.
