A process for separating secondary-butanol impurity from ethyl acetate (EtAc) by feeding the impure EtAc to a distillation column operating at a pressure of less than 1 bar absolute to provide (1) a stream comprising EtAc as a major component and (2) a residue or a second stream comprising at least some sec- butanol from said impure EtAc. The process can be applied to purifying EtAc derived from (a) catalytic reaction of ethylene with acetic acid followed by (b) a hydrogenation step. The 2-butanone impurity produced in step (a) is difficult to separate from EtAc, and step (b) converts it to sec-butanol which can be separated by the reduced pressure fractionation of the invention.

L'invention concerne un procédé pour extraire des impuretés de sec-butanol contenues dans de l'acétate d'éthyle (EtAc), ce procédé consistant à acheminer l'EtAc impur dans une colonne de distillation fonctionnant à une pression inférieure à 1 bar absolu pour produire (1) un flux comprenant de l'EtAc comme composant majeur et (2) un résidu ou un second flux comprenant au moins une partie du sec-butanol provenant de l'EtAc impur. Ce procédé peut être mis en oeuvre pour purifier de l'EtAc dérivé (a) de la réaction catalytique d'éthylène avec de l'acide acétique, suivie (b) d'une étape d'hydrogénation. Les impuretés de 2-butanone produites lors de l'étape (a) sont difficiles à séparer de l'EtAc. L'étape (b) les convertit en sec-butanol, qui peut être séparé par le procédé de fractionnement à pression réduite mis au point selon l'invention.
