A multilayer perform and container, and method of forming the same, having at least one layer including polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) to provide enhanced oxygen barrier performance and thermal stability. The PEN layer may be a homopolymer, copolymer, or blend of PEN and 0-20 first hign-PEN embodiment, the exterior layer contains on the order of 80-100% PEN and 0-20 % PET by total weight of the layer, and a core layer of a nonstrain hardenable polyester such as PETG. In a second low-PEN embodiment, the exterior layer includes a strain hardenable low-PEN copolymer or blend including on the order of 1-20 % PEN and 80-99 % PET, and the core layer is a strain-hardenable polyester such as a low-copolymer PET. In a third mid-range PEN embodiment, the exterior wall includes a substantially amorphous PEN copolymer or blend containing on the order of 20-80 % PEN and 80-20 % of another polyester such as PET, and a strain-hardened core layer of polyester such as a low-copolymer PET. To further enhance the oxygen barrier and thermal stability properties, the core layer may further includes a copolymer of blend of PEN. Alternatively, PEN may be provided in an interior layer only.
Préforme multicouche pour récipients et leur procédé de formage qui comporte au moins une couche de polyéthylènenaphtalate (PEN) formant une barrière efficace vis-à-vis de l'oxygène et dotée d'une bonne résistance à la chaleur. La couche de PEN peut consister en un homopolymère, un copolymère ou en mélange de PENs. Dans une première variante riche en PEN, la couche extérieure contient 80-100 % de PEN et 0-20 % de PET du poids total de la couche, et la couche centrale est un polyester non durcissant à l'étirage tel que le PETG. Dans une seconde variante pauvre en PEN, la couche extérieure est un copolymère pauvre en PEN durcissant à l'étirage ou un mélange comprenant 1-20 % de PEN et 20 à 80 % de PET, et la couche centrale est un polyester durcissant à l'étirage tel que du PET pauvre en copolymère. Dans une troisième variante à teneur médiane en PEN, la couche extérieure est un copolymère de PEN sensiblement amorphe ou un mélange de 20 à 80 % de PEN et de 80 à 20 % d'un autre polyester tel que le PET, et la couche centrale durcissant à l'étirage est un polyester tel que du PET pauvre en copolymère. Pour renforcer encore la barrière contre l'oxygène, et la résistance à la chaleur, la couche centrale peut en outre contenir un copolymère ou un mélange de PEN. Enfin, à titre d'alternative, le PEN peut n'être présent que dans une couche intérieure.
