Disclosed is a method of making an aromatic nitrile by reacting a benzotrichloride having the formula Image with a source of ammonia, where Z is R, X, Image , Image , -ROR, or -OR, R is alkyl from C1 to C20 or aryl from C1 to C25, X is halogen and n is 0 to 5. The reaction is performed in the presence of 0.01 to about 5 wt% of a catalyst having the general formula M p/2O or MX p ~ mH2O and about 0.01 to about 5 wt% water, as free water or water of hydration, based on the weight of the benzotrichloride, where M is beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, or barium, m is 0 to 6, and p is the valence of M.

Divulgation d'une méthode pour produire un nitrile aromatique, en faisant réagir une source d'ammoniac avec un trichlorure de benzyle de formule Image , dans laquelle : Z représente R, X, Image , Image , -ROR ou -OR; R représente un alkyle en C1-C20 ou un aryle en C1-C25; X est un halogène; et n est un nombre allant de 0 à 5. La réaction a lieu en présence de 0,01 à environ 5 % d'un catalyseur de formule générale Mp/2O ou MXp.mH2O, et d'environ 0,01 à 5 % d'eau, sous forme d'eau libre ou d'eau d'hydratation, par rapport au poids de trichlorure de benzyle.
