A conventional cooling system for an engine including a coolant recirculation duct, a pump, a first radiator for cooling the engine and a second radiator for heating a passenger compartment of the vehicle is supplemented by the addition of a further pump which is driven by the battery supply from the engine to enhance the circulation of coolant to the passenger compartment heater. The device is used without additional heating elements to extract heat from the engine at a time when the engine is stopped, when the engine is idling or when the engine remains cold after an initial start.
