A system, consisting of an ultrasonic transmitter and a receiver, is described for controlling certain electronic sound- generating and radio-frequency-generating devices. In restricted areas where the audible sound generated by these electronic devices is objectionable, one or more ultrasonic transmitters are placed to blanket the area, each emitting an ultrasonic signal periodically. In electronic devices having ultrasonic receivers, the receipt of this signal prevents the electronic device from generating or reproducing objectionable audible sound for a short period of time after receipt of this ultrasonic signal, which is slightly longer than the period in which the ultrasonic signal is sent. Alternatively, an objectionable radio transmission can be inhibited. As long as an individual is in a restricted area, his or her electronic device will be automatically muted. After leaving such an area, the receiver will not detect the ultrasonic signal, and will function normally. Alternatively, ultrasonic transmitters are placed at entrances and exits. As an electronic device is brought into a restricted area through an entrance, it is muted, but when it passes through an exit, it reverts to a non-muted state. Thirdly, ultrasonic transmitters, placed at entrances to restricted areas will activate a timer for a time predetermined to be when the restricted device is in the restricted area; while the timer is active, the device is muted. Therefore, while an electronic device is in the restricted area, it is muted. This apparatus can optionally be enhanced with a communication channel to configure and enable the ultrasonic transmitters, and a communication channel to restore a device to its non-muted state when the ultrasonic transmitter fails to do so.
