A strip of a flexible packaging material is drawn from a supply coil by a feed device operating at a variable torque and advanced to a packaging station, wrapping tools at the station are displaced to wrap the strip as it is are advanced around a package with the strip overlapping itself on a rear face of the package, the overlapping ends are fastened together, and the strip wrapped around the package is cut. A torque curve is established in accordance with the movement of the tools and the torque of the strip-feed device is varied to comply with the torque curve.
