The present invention is a method of filling (43) the interstice (D) be- tween the anode structure (14) and the cathode structure (16) of an electro- phoretic image display (EPID) (10) with a fluid dispersion (24) containing solid pigment particles (22). And more specifically, a method of filling such EPIDs (10) when the interstice (D) between the anode structure (14) and the cathode (16) structure is less than 0.007 inches. The present invention method includes the steps of coating the anode structure (14) with pigment particles (22) prior to the assembly (51) of the anode structure (14) or ca- thode structure (16) into the EPID. After the pigment particle coated anode (14) a cathode (16) structure has been assembled into the EPID (10), the EPID (10) is filled with a suspension medium (24) lacking any pigment particles. An electrophoretic effect is then created within the EPID (10) causing the pigment particles (22) to migrate away from the anode (14) or cathode (16) structure they coat, thereby becoming disperse within the su- spension medium (24).
