2094728 9208903 PCTABS00013 A failure indicating device wherein a fluid is encased within a bore in a fastener. In another embodiment of the invention, the fluid (14) is encased within a thin walled capsule (12) which in turn is encapsulated within a bore in the fastener. Upon failure of the fastener, the encased fluid (14) will leak out onto the external surface and its detection will indicate that the fastener has failed. The stress which causes the fastener to fail will also assist the fluid (14) to leak out onto its external surface. To facilitate the leakage of the fluid, one or more shallow and narrow groove(s) (16) may be machined onto the external surface of the fastener so that the leaked fluid will travel along this/these groove(s) (16) to the preferred external end of the fastener. This is desirable in cases where only one side of the joint is accessible.
