Abstract of the Disclosure An electrode is provided with a plate-shaped electrode element consisting substantially of a ceramic material having an electron-conducting surface, and the edge of the said electrode element is roughened and provided with a plastic coating having a U-shaped profile, and the said coating is in turn welded in a gas-tight and liquid-tight manner to a plastic frame having a U- shaped profile and enclosing the electrode element. This outer plastic frame can itself in turn be surrounded by a sealing element, which can, for example, be inflated by means of compressed air, so that when it is used in a cell housing, individually sealed off electrolyte chambers are formed. The plate-shaped ceramic electrode element consists substantially of titanium oxide of the Magnelli phase and, in order to activate it, the surface can be coated with platinum metal or platinum metal compounds. A method for manufacturing the electrode, an electrode of this type, and the use of such an electrode as a bipolar electrode in an electrochemical cell arrangement are described.
