The present invention relates to an electronic shut off device. It is particularly adapted for installation in vehicles, and is intended to limit the duration that a vehicle can be left idling. Idling of vehicles is common, particularly in colder climates. However, idling also wastes fuel, and generates unnecessary harmful pollutant exhaust gases. Minimization of unnecessary idling will have a beneficial impact, both financially and environmentally. The present device includes timer means to automatically shut off an idling engine after a selected time interval. As well, the devise may be integral with a remote engine starter device. If a remote start is forgotten, the engine will be shut down after the selected time interval. Even more importantly, the device will shut down an engine which has been inadvertently started, such as by accidental triggering of a remote starter. In circumstances where a car is started in a garage, the idle shut of device may save lives of occupants of the adjoining home, by preventing the extended production of fatal exhaust gases. Once shut down, the engine cannot be remotely started for a period of time, although it can be restarted with the ignition key.
