ABSTRACT An animal trap having a self-latching trigger is dis- closed. The trap includes at least one jaw pivotally mounted to a base and spring biased from a set position to a release position. The trigger includes a trigger arm resiliently biased toward the set position. A sear is pivotally mounted to the base and freely rotatable between set and release positions. The sear has one contact surface which engages the trigger arm in the set position. A second contact surface on the sear is disposed within the rotational path of the jaw and in the set position engages the jaw to retain it against the spring bias- ing force. To set the trap the jaw is rotated from the release to the set position. During such rotation the jaw engages the second contact surface pivoting the sear to the set position while the trigger arm is biased toward the set position. The trigger arm automatically snaps into contact with the first contact surface of the sear.
