ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for producing spherical particles of carbon or activated carbon, wherein a mixture of a pitch and a viscosity-reducing agent is melt-extruded into the form of a string-like body, the string-like body thus obtained is broken into a stick-like body with a ratio of length to diameter of less than 5, and the stick-like body is thermally deformed into a spherical particle in a hot water bath. The particles are used to treat industrial waste water, for the purification of drinking water, to remove sulfur oxides from exhaust gases and in other areas wherein their sphericity is effective.
