ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There are provided bis(thioether) aromatic dian- hydrides and method for making these materials. A bisthiol in the presence of base, or bisthiol basic salt, can be reacted with a nitro- or halo-substituted phthalic compound, such as an anhydride or anhydride precursor. These aromatic dithiodianhydrides can be used to make polyimides and polyesters, and can be used as curing agents for epoxy resins.
