WG-229 CAN ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved geophysical exploration system includes a seismic cable, in-cable electronics, high data capacity recording equipment, and means for transmitting data from approximately 500 equally spaced elemental sensor units. Signals representing seismic waves received at each of these 500 units are transmitted from the cable to a central control and recording unit mounted in a towing ship. Connected to the cable are one or more array-forming systems for processing seismic data from the sensors. In combining signals from the individual sensor units making up each array, the array-forming apparatus may increase the relative weighting of signals from selected sensor units in each array and may vary the relative delay between signals arriving at different sensors making up an array. A simplified array former may selectively simulate various known forms of seismic cables, including those normally employed for land and shallow water surveys and different arrays normally used for deep water surveys. To enhance the high frequencies which are characteristic of shallow reflections received at sensors close to the shot point, the data from cable sections closer to the shot point are sampled at a higher rate such as 2,000 samples per second for an initial period such as the first one second or so of the recording time. Thereafter, the sampling rate is reduced to 1,000 samples per second, as data from the entire cable is sampled.
