ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Clarifiers are described for use in the gravity separation of suspended particles from liquids. The clarifiers each include a tank for containing a liquid to be treated and a sludge conveyor device for removing settled sludge from the tank. The conveyor device sweeps over the bottom of the tank to remove settled sludge and includes a sludge removal screw and means for driving the screw in rotation. According to one aspect of the invention, at least part of the conveyor device is movable from a submerged position of normal use to an elevated position for maintenance and/or repair purposes. According to another aspect, the screw driving means is a driving wheel coupled to the screw and arranged in contact with an inner surface of the tank so that the wheel is driven and drives the screw as the conveyor device sweeps over the bottom of the tank.
