ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to the recovery of molybdenum, vanadium, aluminium, as well as cobalt and nickel from resi- dues of hydrodesulfurization catalysts. According to the in- vention, the catalyst residues for the hydrodesulfurization of hydrocarbons are chlorinated by means of a mixture of gaseous chlorine, hydrochloric acid and water vapour under such condi- tions that molybdenum and vanadium volatilized as oxychlorides and the aluminum is volatilized as chloride. The so volatili- zed products are absorbed by means of an aqueous medium con- taining hydrochloric acid. The water vapour content of the chlorination gaseous mixture preferably does not exceed about 15% by volume in respect of the total gaseous mixture.
