ABSTRACT Disclosed is apparatus for controlling a tongs arrangement which includes a tongs lift and lift speed arrangement, a backup tong and a power driven tong. Electrical signals are generated to lift the backup tong and power tong at a predetermined spread to a predetermined elevation, and a generated electrical signal closes and locks the backup tong when lifted. A generated electrical signal drives the power driven tong when the backup tong is closed and locked.
