ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method is provided for making diaryliodonium salt photoinitiators, based on the initial formation of a diaryliodonium bisulfate of the formula [(R)a (R1)b I]+ [HSO4]- where R is a monovalent aromatic organic radical selected from the class consisting of aromatic carbocyclic or heterocyclic having from 6-20 carbon atoms, R1 is a divalent aromatic organic radical, a is a whole number equal to 0 or 2, b is a whole number equal to 0 or 1, and the sum of a+b is equal to 1 or 2. A significant improvement in reproducibility, reaction time and yield can be achieved in making diaryliodonium bisulfate salts if the acetic acid used in the reaction mixture of the previously-known method is replaced with methylene chloride and the reaction is run at a temperature of from -25°C to +25°C, preferably -5°C to +5°C. The improved method for making bisulfate salts comprises: A) effecting a coupling reaction at a temperature of from -25°C to +25°C between a C(6-30) aromatic compound and potassium iodate in the presence of a mixture consisting essentially of methylene chloride, acetic anhydride and dulfuric acid, and B) receiving the diaryliodonium bisulfate salt from the mixture of (A). The bisulfate salt is reacted with a metal salt of the formula MQ to produce by a metathesis, a diaryliodonium salt of the formula [(R)a(R1)b I]+ Q- where M is a metal ion, Q is an anion selected from the class consisting of a halogen ion, YF6 , NO3-, C1O4 , CP3SO3-, PO4-3, SO4-2, HSO4 and CH3C6H5SO3-, and Y is selected from the class consisting of P, As and Sb. The resulting diaryliodonium salts can be used as photoinitiators which are useful in making ultraviolet- curnble compositions.
