ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A novel positive drive power transmission belt is provided herein. The belt has a plurality of alternating grooves and elastomeric teeth ex- tending generally transversely thereof. The belt includes a tensile mem- ber, with the teeth being bonded to one side of the tensile member. A backing layer of elastomeric material is bonded to the tensile member. A covering is provided for the teeth and the grooves. Finally reinforcing fibers are distributed through at least a portion of each of the teeth. In the area of the grooves, the backing layer is free of the fibers, and the interface between the tensile member and the covering is also substanti- ally free of the fibers. In the teeth, the fibers are distributed at least in the area immediately adjoining the covering. Thus, the tensile member comprises a plurality of convolutions of cords, and the fibers are present in at least a portion of the spaces between the cords. In this way, an im- proved toothed belt is provided.
