ABSTRACT A process for the treatment of molten iron and for increasing the proportion of scrap in a converter by injecting an oxygen containing treating gas which contains calcium compounds characterised in that the treatment gas charged with calcium carbide is injected by means of a lance onto or into the molten iron. This process provides a complete and uniform reaction. The oxidized calcium carbide is a very highly reactive calcium oxide which accelerates metallurgical reactions (desulphurization, dephosphorization) required anyway. In addition, the lime charge can be substantially reduced which shortens the lime dissolution process.
