ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In treating wood, prior to the impregnation with monomers containing a vinyl group, the wood is exposed to ?-rays of Co60, with integrated doses from 2 to 100 Mrd, and the post-irradiation to ?-rays of Co60 after the impregnation, with integrated doses from 1 to 30 Mrd suffi- cient to polymerize the monomer used. The disclosure describes a process for treating wood wherein wood is pre- irradiated with ?-rays of a Co60-source with integrated doses from 2 to 100 Mrd. Wood is thereafter impregnated with mono- mers containing a vinyl group. Then, the wood is subsequently exposed to ?-rays of a Co60-source with integrated doses from 1 to 30 Mrd sufficient to polymerize the monomer.
